WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN SELECTING A GOOD PILATES PROGRAM?

Did you know that currently, there are no laws that govern the instruction of quality pilates instruction? Anyone can teach pilates, and this is SCARY. It takes years of dedicated practice and intense study to understand all that pilates has to offer and to apply that knowledge toward training others. There are many programs out there that offer a certification in a day or a weekend. This does not give prospective teachers the opportunity to understand the breadth of the work including the proper execution of each exercise, understanding the applications, and most importantly, modifying the exercise to meet the needs of the client. This is a recipe for injury. So many people have issues within their bodies such as sports related injuries, back problems, osteoporosis, etc. It is important that the instructor understand the implications of these issues and modify the program accordingly. Below is a guide of questions you should ask of the pilates program you are pursuing. The questions below are recommended by the Pilates Method Alliance - www.pilatesmethodalliance.com , to help you find a good program.

1. Are the instructors trained through a comprehensive training program?

2. Did that training program require a written and practical test, lecture, observation, practice and apprentice hours?

3. How many total hours were spent in the training program? (The Pilates Method is a knowledge based method of exercise and training. Time spent in certification training produces qualified teachers.)

4. Does the instructor have any other movement related teaching experience.

5. How long have the instructors been teaching Pilates?

6. What is the instructor's/ studio's philosophy and specialty? Are they able to handle special needs, injuries and rehabilitation?

7. Does the instructor or studio teach the full repertoire of Pilates on all pieces of apparatus?

Here are the answers to the questions above by studio owner Amanda Martin.

1. I have been trained and certified through a comprehensive certification program that requires 450 hours of study.

2. Yes, the program required practice, practice teaching, observation, assisting, and weekend workshops. The practical exam was two-fold. I was required to demonstrate that I could properly perform all levels of the classical pilates exercises. Additionally, I was evaluated teaching a client that I had never met before the test. I needed to evaluate her on the spot and design a class that would be appropriate for her. As a debriefing, I needed to explain why I chose the exercises I did, what my goals would be for her if she were a client I would continue working with, and what her future program would consist of. Additionally, I had a written exam which included philosophy and principles of Pilates, applications of the work and anatomy.

3. My training program required a minimum of 450 hours of training prior to certification.

4. Yes - I have over eight years experience of teaching dance.

5. I have been teaching pilates for four years.

6. I feel that each person is unique and has their own goals of what they would like to achieve from the program. I feel that it is my job to work with them to help them achieve their goals, while staying true to the Pilates Method. I have furthered my training in New York, by becoming a Pink Ribbon Post Rehabilitation Breast Cancer Specialist. This allows me to cater my program to breast cancer survivors. I had a desire to do this as a way to help my mom after her breast cancer surgery. Additionally, I have worked with pregnant clients, clients with osteoporosis, back pain, injury, scoliosis, hip replacements and knee replacements.

7. Yes, I was trained on all pieces of apparatus, and I offer classes on these pieces privately. In addition to two reformers, we have a half trap table, chair, spine corrector and several magic circles.
